Affiliate Marketing

What Is Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate Marketing is the ability to sell someone else’s products or service on your own website using a link to their online store.

When a person clicks on your link it takes them to where the product is being sold, and if that customer purchases the product or any other product, you receive a commission.

What makes this type of business very attractive for retirees is the fact that you do not have to have your own products or service.  You simply choose a product (or service) that you would like to promote, and then become an affiliate with the company selling that product.  They take care of the purchase, the shipping and everything else, and you make a commission just for referring that customer to them.

Why Do Companies Use Affiliate Marketers

Generally speaking, merchants seek to advertise their products in a variety of ways.   The more ways they use to advertise, the more money they make.  It therefore makes economic sense to them to have others advertise for them.  The more people who advertise products, the more money the merchant makes.  For your part in bringing them customers, these merchants pay you a commission. The amount of the commission depends on the merchant.  Each merchant has a different structure for their affiliates.

The Benefits of Being an Affiliate

The greatest benefit of becoming an Affiliate Marketer is that once you have got your site set up, it runs on auto pilot which means that you can get sales and make money while you are asleep, or doing other the things you like.  I like this best of all.

In addition to that, affiliate marketing offers an individual the ability to start a business with low or no start-up cost.  For the most part it is free to join the program you select, and there is no obligation to stay if you don’t make money.  With regards to products, there is no inventory needed, and therefore no shipping required on your part. The merchant takes care of all of that for you.  All you do is point customers to them.

Best of all the entire world is your market.  You work from home in comfort, but yet

you “speak” to millions of potential customers all over the world.  You don’t have to hire employees, pay for marketing or deal with customer problems.

The Choice Is Yours

There is no limit to the types of products you can sell, and there is no risk to you.  Anything you love with a passion can be the product (or service) you promote.  You can even choose to market more than one product.  It’s entirely up to you!

Feel free to explore your options by joining Wealthy Affiliate and finding your niche.  “Niche” means that particular corner of the market you want to target.  It begins with something you like, or an activity you like to do.  Once you have located your niche, you can join an affiliate program which supports your niche.

I have a question about affiliate marketing. I’ve just started a blog about simple cooking techniques and can’t decide whether I should be promoting physical or digital products.

The cooking niche appears to have a fair bit of both. I couldn’t possibly buy every single utensils on Amazon to write product reviews. It would cost me a bomb. On the other hand, cooking eBooks seem to pay a higher profit margin.

What would your suggestion be? Thanks.

      Hello Cathy,

As a consumer, I usually read several reviews of an item before I buy, so I think it would be a good idea if you could do that kind of research and then make your recommendation in your ebook. Since buying cooking utensils would cost too much, I would say you should go digital. After reading a few reviews you can make your own determination as to the merit(s) of the utensils; and then you could even include an interesting recipe to go with your recommendation.

WOW, affiliate marketing sure seems like a cool concept when it comes to making money online. 🙂

I mean, what better way is there to earn from simply promoting others products/services on your website and driving traffic to it? It’s an ingenious idea!

There are no akward customers to deal with (lol), shipping is taken care of, and also sales. It sure beats working a job and living payday-to-payday, month in, month out, 12 months a year.

I love the fact that there’s so much flexibility with affiliate marketing, and you can generate your own level of income.

This definately is a great way for the retired to earn income and even as an interest. I recommend it. However, its actually a great idea for anyone looking to have thier own online business, retired or not. Running a business on auto pilot seems like a no brainer to me as it’s making money for you even when your sleeping. Brilliant 🙂

    • Judy says:

Definitely. Anyone can do affiliate marketing. Best of all, you can begin with a hobby or any talent you may have, and that can become your niche. Then you can expand from that point and connect with others of similar interest.

Thanks very much for your input, Rina.
